The Journal Playlist - April 2024, pt.1

New things we listen to these last days!

There are some great music and sounds I've been listening for a while now and I would love to share with you! Including some songs coming from late 2023 until now!

Agent Blå - Discount

Agent Blå is a Swedish indie pop band known for crafting dreamy soundscapes that blend elements of post-punk and shoegaze. Characterized by lush, reverb-soaked guitars, haunting melodies, and emotive vocals, Agent Blå's discography includes internationally critically acclaimed albums like "Agent Blue" (2017) and the ”Medium Rare” EP (2018).  The new album “STAB!” brings a wider musical array with influences from krautrock, instrumental & psychedelic music, while still staying true to their post punk heritage. The album was recorded in Studio Bella Figura, Gothenburg under extremely spartan conditions, which helped define the sound of the album. The first single “Discount” is about finding familiarity in having something haunting you. Befriending the void as a necessity. A powerful comeback that makes us think about their debut single “Strand”.

Noel Husser - Beyond

"Beyond" is inspired from two Video Games. First of all "Beyond two souls" with her twin spirit connected to her soul which gave her a special power. And second the unfortunately not so good game "Medium" from Bloober Studios. But the idea of being a medium who can travel the world of tortured souls and release them into the afterlife caught Noel Husser attention who created a song about these topics.

Noel is an ambitious multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and music-enthusiast from Munich, Germany. His passion for making music extends to all musical genres. In 2014 he attended the "Neue Jazzschool" and graduated three years later as a certified ensemble conductor for Rock/Pop/Jazz. Since 2017 he is a full time guitar teacher.3 years later there is new music about to be released. The recent single "Footprints" is a straight follow up of the previous full-length album. The Vibe of the new song is very happy, catchy and the song doesn't take itself too serious. More serious though, will be the new EP "Beyond". It's a dark and epic progressive Metal inferno. The title track and single "Beyond" will be released on 2nd of February 2024.

Amir Ekbatani - Tell Me You Love Me

The second single from indie-pop artist/producer Amir Ekbatani. This is an homage to one of the greatest decades of music: the 1980s. In order to truly capture the essence of the era, all sounds on this song were created by Amir in his studio with the use of various analog synths (Juno, OBX, and Minimoog) and a LM2 Linndrum machine.

If there has been one constant theme exemplified in the life narrative of Amir Ekbatani, its that giving up is never an option. Whether it was as an overlooked high school football recruit who took a chance on his dreams and eventually made his way as a two-year starter at UCLA. Or being given a 2% chance of living after a catastrophic auto accident completely derailed his life, resulting in the amputation of his left leg. (Spoiler alert: he made it.) It took him 4 years and over a dozen surgeries to walk again, but once on his feet he never stopped moving, enjoying a very successful career as a fitness trainer in Los Angeles and Worldwide. In fact, you can still workout with him on Apple Fitness Plus. Listeners will delight in the fact that everything they hear in Amir’s songs, he has had his hands on. They’ll hear him as the vocalist, as an instrumentalist (guitar, piano, synth), as the composer, the songwriter, the producer, and even as a mix engineer. You’ll hear him do all of that on IN MY LANE, out everywhere on 12/1/2023.

Davidovix - Ultra-Violence

Davidovix's, "Ultra-Violence", is a pulsating journey through the neon-lit streets of a dystopian future. From the moment the song begins, you're enveloped in a world of sleek cybernetic enhancements and sprawling cityscapes bathed in the glow of holographic advertisements.

Truly Significant - Within Reach

"Within Reach" explores the experience of tasting false hope (whether in material or emotional form) then losing it all in the matter of seconds. Your memory is looping over and over again, imagining different outcomes or versions of how it all could have been.

Truly Significant / Truly Signi. Patrik Větrovec (Truly Signi) creates twisted music that captures the personal conflict with inner self, expressing a struggle of finding place in an anxious, chaotic world. Inspired by existentialism and rawness of the 90's, he's trying to realize his vision of a modern industrial techno-rock fusion set in a bleak, cinematic soundscapes.

Nrvs - The Sane

"The Sane" rocks at any tempo and makes sense with all sorts of different vibes. You can get really mad playing and singing it. And this groove is where Nrvs feel at our most hiphop-inspired, trying to channel RZA and treat the band like a living sampler (no looping allowed).

Nrvs, this mysterious trio are currently gearing up to present an anonymous live experience that will send you back to your shrink. Along with frequent visual collaborator Mike Raymond (HMLTD), who has created several retina-scorching videos for the group, Nrvs are shaping “a nightmare-normal vision of the near future, that you can dance to”.

Vesperwynd - Osmosis

In "Osmosis", the fourth release from Michigan's Vesperwynd, a solitary journey across an urban landsape becomes a rumination on nature's interaction with humanity's creations.

Drawing comparisons to Wolves in the Throne Room and Blut Aus Nord, Michigan's Vesperwynd bring diverse musical backgrounds to a new metal project. Influences include black metal, shoegaze, darkwave, and post-punk. In their unique and heartfelt take on black metal, the quintet bring their varied creative backgrounds (ranging from hardcore punk to experimental electronic) to this brand new genre-bending project. Blastbeats, shrieks, and eerie synths contrast with passages of reverb drenched guitar and cold restrained vocals.

Night Sins - The Lowest Places You'll Go

Night Sins (Kyle Kimball of NOTHING) is aural proof this side of the Atlantic that life does not walk so dark all over Europe alone. Emerging sometime around 2010 under the oppressive skies of Philadelphia, these overcast malcontents are fitly connected to a city engrossed in shadow-soaked vices and dilapidated architecture. Not to imply that there isn't a comforting sort of gloominess in this musical malaise, as Night Sins frolic down the musical path originally cut by The Sisters of Mercy and Clan of Xymox with enough hints of The Mission and extensions into 80's darkwave to produce memorable songwriting that stands on it's own.

Bass and drums punch through the mist thick as thieves, guitar lines circle like falcons overhead, minimal synths street clean some of the residual dirt, and singer-songwriter Kyle Kimball's vocals confidently press into the intimate fog. There is a brilliant light in the midst of dimness, and Night Sins is carrying the torch.
