Video Pick: Grey Gallows - Dunkelheit

"Dunkelheit" is the new hypnotic, dark beat, urban wave from Grey Gallows!

Greek darkwave and goth-electro duo Grey Gallows, consisting of Konstantin and Dionisis, return with their haunting new single and video “Dunkelheit”, released via Cold Transmission Music. The track serves as the first glimpse of their forthcoming S/T album, due out October 17th, and it’s a powerful statement of vision and intent. A fall into solitude and isolation that ultimately finds its way on the dance floor.

“Berlin, Frankfurt, Cologne, Leipzig. Lonely journeys in the twilight, the feeling of a lost self among a stranger crowd,” Grey Gallows reflects. “The frozen analog synthesizers and the repetitive rhythmic bass lines create a stressful atmosphere, a sense of impending threat, while black and white imagery reflects the bitter shades of soul. But finally redemption comes with the contact of bodies through dance.”

The official video for “Dunkelheit” recorded in black and white, matching the cold and dark sounds of the song. From the clear expression of feeling lonely, as the song goes on, the characters come together on a dark dance, moving from isolation to connection.

Grey Gallows have long drawn from the shadows of post-punk, coldwave, and dark synth traditions, but Dunkelheit” pushes further into pure electronic territory. Driven by glacial analog synth lines and a relentless bass pulse, "Dunkelheit" displays an icy tension that mirrors the anonymous streets of urban Europe. It’s the sound of wandering through, deep and narrow alleys at night, where isolation exist on every step.

"Dunkelheit" is performed and sung in German, a language that we haven't heard from the duo before. The choice to write and perform in German amplifies the bleakness. The lyrics capture both isolation, distance and a deep personal connection. A statement that even in darkness, beauty and meaning remain. The chorus highlights themes of decay and ephemerality, while the song resists despair by trying to trust human connection.

From brooding introspection, "Dunkelheit" rises into a liberation. The hypnotic rhythm goes from tension into atmospheric patterns, depicting the emotions of the moment when isolation turns into communication on the dance floor. The song follows a path common in goth-electro, starting with the lonely sound of early ’80s EBM and leading to today’s dance floors, where people come together regardless of their emotional state.

Set for release on October 17, the forthcoming Dunkelheit LP finds Grey Gallows working exclusively with analogue and digital synthesizers, expanding their sound palette while keeping their gloomy signature. The duo describe it as a journey across genres and decades of influence, from the raw intensity of early industrial and EBM to contemporary electronic textures.

If the title track is any indication, Dunkelheit LP will be one of Grey Gallows' most powerful albums, delivering the vehicle to start a journey into darkness that ends not in despair, but in intense dance and renew connections.
