Today's Sound: NOKTVA - Icarus
New single "Icarus" from Italian goth rockers NOKTVA!
NOKTVA returns with the release of the new single and official video, "Icarus", out on September 22nd. NOKTVA is a quintet coming from Catania, Italy. Formed back in 2017, by Lvx Noire (keyboards) and Kurten Keys (guitars) with the addition of Ira (bass) and Jack (drums) and the magnificent voice of Miriam, NOKTVA released their debut full-length album, "Like Seven Forgotten Tales", in December 2021, including their previously released goth-rock / post-punk hit single "In Deep".
NOKTVA releases "Icarus", almost, two years after their debut album and for a special reason. "Icarus" is dedicate to Kenneth Anger who passed away on May 11th, 2023. Kenneth Anger was an American underground experimental filmmaker, actor, and author whose films (mainly short) variously merge surrealism with homoeroticism and the occult, and have been described as containing "elements of erotica, documentary, psychodrama, and spectacle".
NOKTVA manages to depict these elements of Anger's work in the new single "Icarus" with an an ethereal and obscure intro which leads into a dark sound with solid, sharp guitars, strong bassline which keeps the tension throughout the whole melody and a gloomy contrast in vocals with two segments coming from theatrical male and female voices. A beautiful gothic rock song built on dark arrangement and the lyrics of Kurten Keys.
The official video of "Icarus" is a part of Aner's "Rabbit's Moon", an avant-garde short film, filmed in 1950. "Rabbit's Moon" was not completed (nor did it see release) until 1971.
