Emmon - Dark, vampiric electro
"Dark" by Swedish artist Emmon is a hypnotic blend of electro-pop, EBM, and industrial elements.
"Dark" crafts a chilling yet infectious atmosphere. From the outset, the track’s strong basslines and pulsating beats drive a steady, catchy tempo. Sleek and textured production, with industrial undertones that add a mechanical, cold edge to the otherwise melodic structure. Emmon’s haunting vocals float above the instrumental layers, creating a striking contrast between the hard-hitting rhythms and her ethereal, almost ghostly delivery. This duality between this form of harshness and haunting beauty is, perhaps, the song’s strong feature, making it both danceable and emotionally resonant.
"Dark" maintains its tight, energetic tempo while weaving in atmospheric synths and menacing undertones, building an immersive and tense soundscape. Additionally the EBM influence shines through in the strong, relentless beats, while the electro-pop elements keep the melody accessible and memorable. Emmon’s vocals, filled with an air of mystery and allure, add emotional depth, enhancing the song’s gothic edge. The lyrics and sound perfectly capture a feeling of lurking darkness beneath the surface, offering a balance of haunting beauty and industrial strength. "Dark" is offering something that’s both catchy and hauntingly atmospheric.
The esteemed electro/dance project Emmon saw the light of day in 2001, originally created as an art project during Emma Nylén's studies at art school while experimenting in the sound lab. With her explosive one-woman shows and engaging DJ-gigs, she quickly took her place front and centre of the electroclash genre at alternative stages in Sweden. After several years of touring as part of the popular popband Paris, her long-awaited and intensely hyped up first solo album as EMMON, "The Art and The Evil" was released in 2007 on Wonderland Records. Since then, EMMON has been crowned Sweden's electro queen, released 5 full-leangth albums, received several awards and completed numerous tours, club and festival performances.
EMMON, also known as Emma Nylén, has been riding high on the success of her latest album, 'RECON', which received glowing reviews and nominations for best album from esteemed publications such as GAFFA, HYMN, and DN. Notably, the album was awarded "Synth Release of the Year" at the 2023’s Manifest Gala, the prestigious "Release of the Year" by the highly appraised Synthsläggan Awards, as well as "Electro of the Year" by GAFFA Awards. Now, Sweden's own Electro Clash queen is back with a new EP, set to drop at the prestigious boutique label Icons Creating Evil Art later this spring.
The first offering from EMMON’s new EP is the vampire epic 'DARK', in which the artist's distinctive soprano vocals are enveloped in impeccably clean yet gritty soundscapes. The song weaves a narrative reminiscent of classic vampire lore, exploring themes of light and dark, violence and romance. EMMON elaborates on the track's inspiration, stating, "DARK is about vampirism and/or a person's obsession with their partner in an unhealthy relationship, where the need for closeness goes too far. A desperation and insanity that might end in destruction or even in evil sudden death… But it also reflects the romanticized violence found in any random vampire movie, where darkness and light are crucial to a vampire's existence.”
