"Dark Matters" by Double Happiness is a gripping post-punk track that delves deep into the psychological turmoil of someone wrestling with their past decisions.
With brooding bassline and sharp, angular guitar riffs, "Dark Matters" sets a dark and tense mood from the outset, while the pulsating synths construct an eerie, atmospheric backdrop that intensifies the emotional weight of the narrative. The protagonist’s internal struggle is reflected in the raw, almost pleading vocals, which oscillate between uncertainty and defiance. This tension between doubt and justification drives the song forward, creating a haunting yet captivating soundscape where the listener can feel the inner conflict hiding just beneath the surface.
The lyrics of "Dark Matters" explore themes of guilt, justification, and moral ambiguity, with the protagonist questioning whether his past actions were warranted or a result of personal failings. The minimalist yet intense production accentuates this mental battle, with each verse adding layers of tension as he grapples with the shadows of his past. The dark synth elements give the track a cold, mechanical edge, while the post-punk influences maintain a raw, human vulnerability. Double Hapinness succeeds in creating an emotional song, making "Dark Matters" a deep exploration of self-reflection and the grey areas of moral decisions.
Double Happiness comments on "Dark Matters": "A few people might pick up on the lead synth playing something very close to the melody coming from the mothership in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I was just following the chords when I came up with the melody, same as always. But for the record, if you want to take this as a song about an alien abduction, that’s totally valid."
