Video Pick: Kontravoid - Reckoning

Powerful electro track and horror animation video from Kontravoid!

"Reckoning" by Kontravoid is a dark, electro EBM powerful song that manages to blend a brooding soundscape with intense horror/sci-fi animated visuals, taken from the latest full length album, "Detachment", released on March 1st, 2024, via Artoffact Records. The track is a compelling fusion of throbbing basslines, haunting synths, and strong beats that create an intense atmosphere, perfectly suited to the eerie and futuristic themes.

"Reckoning" opens with a dark, haunted ambience followed by pulsating beats that immediately sets a tense and foreshadowing tone. Layers of distorted synths and industrial sounds build upon this foundation, gradually intensifying to create a dense, immersive mood.

"Reckoning" comes with an amazing animated video which can be described as a visual tour that enhances the song's impact. Drawing heavily from horror and sci-fi aesthetics, the animation features stark, dystopian imagery that is both unsettling and captivating. The video’s art style, created by Findlay and collaborator Alec Mackenzie, is detailed and evocative, with a palette dominated by dark emotions and muted tones punctuated by flashes of vivid, unsettling color. This creates a nightmarish landscape that perfectly complements the song’s themes and mood.

Throughout the video, viewers are treated to a series of disturbing and surreal scenes that mirror the track's intensity. The narrative, though abstract, seems to follow a journey through a post-apocalyptic world filled with grotesque creatures and shadowy figures.

"Reckoning" single and video is a perfect example of how music and visuals can be combined to create a deeply immersive experience.

Launched in 2012, Kontravoid is the solo project of masked artist Cameron Findlay. Born in Canada and based now in LA, Findlay combines dark synth pop and hard techno under the Kontravoid banner. He has toured with HEALTH, Boy Harsher, Drab Majesty, Hide, and more. The new album, Detachment, drops March 1st on Artoffact Records. Andi Harriman of Post-Punk.com states: "It toes the line between goth and, dare-we-say-it, rave elements. This – alongside the visual impact he has employed with his masked persona – has been why he’s one of the scene’s most treasured artists."

The "Reckoning" music video was created by Findlay and collaborator Alec Mackenzie. Findlay states: "The video for 'Reckoning' was influenced by horror/sci-fi anime and comics that Alec and I are fans of. The film Wicked City and the work of Yoshiaki Kawajiri was a strong influence on the look of the video, as well as Spawn, Preacher and Heavy Metal Magazine. Once Alec and I starting talking about a creative direction for the video we realized that we both share the same appreciation for a style of animation from the '90s and early 2000s, and wanted to achieve something similar with the video."
